Run, test & debug

Beetool finds how a project runs and puts it behind ▶ and Test — with watch mode and a debugger for Go and Node.

Run configurations

The Run widget in the Code toolbar lists configurations detected from package.json scripts, Go mains, Makefile targets, Cargo, Python, Gradle and Maven, Laravel and Docker Compose — plus your own. Each runs in its own terminal tab; ▶ turns into ■ while it runs.

Configurations are saved in .beetool/run.json, so you can share them through git.

Watch mode

⚡ rebuilds and restarts on save, replacing air or nodemon (their settings are read as a starting point). The old process group is stopped and its ports freed before the restart.

Tests from the gutter

A ▶ next to each test runs just that one: Go tests, benchmarks, fuzz tests and subtests, vitest and jest, pytest. The marker turns green or red.

Debugger

Go (Delve, which you install) and Node / JavaScript / TypeScript (Microsoft js-debug, downloaded by Beetool; node, tsx, ts-node and npm scripts).

  • Breakpoints (gutter or F9), conditional breakpoints, logpoints, mute all. They are yours — stored in Beetool, not the repository.
  • Floating bar: continue / pause F5, step over F10, into F11, out ⇧F11, restart ⇧⌘F5, stop ⇧F5.
  • Panel: call stack (goroutines), variables, watch expressions, breakpoints and a debug console; values on hover and inline while paused.
  • With watch mode on, a save rebuilds and re-attaches. You can debug a single test, too.
